Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has made a bold suggestion for Virat Kohli’s role in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

Ponting, a three-time ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup winner, thinks Kohli should not open the batting despite his success in the Indian Premier League.

Kohli has been in great form for Royal Challengers Bangalore, scoring a tournament-best 708 runs from 14 innings. But Ponting questions if he is the best choice at the top of the order.

“The mantra, I think, for the teams three or four years ago, was making sure that someone at the top of the order made 80 or 100, even if it took them 60 balls, it didn’t matter,” Ponting told the ICC.

Ponting believes the game has changed. Now, teams need players who can score quickly, even if they make fewer runs.

He said, “I think it’s sort of shifting now to be more of a strike rate-based game where you can have a massive impact on a game with a 40 off 15 balls rather than getting an 80 off 55 balls sort of thing.”

Ponting’s idea is that Kohli should play a more aggressive role, which is different from how he usually plays. This has caused a lot of debate among cricket fans and experts about whether Kohli should change his style for the T20 World Cup.
